It’s with great sadness we announce the retirement of Jensen Muirfield, our beloved founder, Publisher, and CEO of Gazette Publication Corporation.
Jensen started the paper after an esteemed career in journalism including covering the Vietnam war as an embedded reporter with the troops on the ground. Jensen’s career took him around the world covering major stories and figures.Winston Garret, publisher of the Gatlinburg Times recently described Jensen as a bulldog, “Whenever and wherever a story was, Jensen wouldn’t rest until he told it. That tenacity he has, that spirit was evident in everything he accomplished.”
Jensen returned home to Brinson Falls, had a family, and started the Gazette. At that time, history shows that Brinson Falls was just a small mountain town in Gatlinburg’s shadow. With Jensen’s vision, dedication, and service to the town council, he not only transformed the Gazette to be a major regional news service, but he helped take a small rustic town on a journey to being a top destination in the south. Everyone who knows Jensen, and especially our organization and all of Brinson Falls, will greatly miss his energy, compassion, and love for the news.
You are all welcome to Jensen’s retirement celebration being held at the Smokey Mountain Lodge on January 21. Please RSVP to us via email or contact either our office or the Lodge.
So, you might be asking what now, what happens to our trusted source of information? Let me be the first to assure you that we will continue to be here for you now and many years in the future. However, we will have a different look.
The economics of the newspaper business has not been kind. Many papers have folded, leaving their readers to the national news services such as CNN, Fox News, etc. We are not folding. Our promise is to never lose the local flavor that you want and have become accustomed to. Gazette Publishing’s going to serve our readers better than ever before.
Before his retirement became official, Jensen appointed his daughter, Taylor Muirfield, acting CEO and publisher. Taylor is a very respected journalist, and her career is in the local news and community outreach. At the Gazette’s quarterly meeting on January 4, the board of directors both accepted Jensen’s retirement, effective immediately and approved his recommendation that Taylor be made permanent CEO and Publisher. Taylor accepted at the meeting and in Taylor’s Corner, there’s a letter to you from our new Publisher, Taylor Muirfield.
